Small steps - great governance - What's your New Year's resolution?
Updated: Jan 2, 2020
Tis the season to be creative, and set yourself some 'must-do's' for the coming year and dare I say new decade. Education funding continues to be strapped, but making small improvements to the way that you govern a school, can have a massive impact.
So start as you mean to go on with a little 3-part plan to improve your school governance!
We know that these 3 little steps will go along way in helping you to improve the impact and effectiveness of your governance, and ensure that all governors add value:
1) Get to know the school and its staff better: find the time to get into school more in 2020; it's one of the best ways of holding leaders to account - seeing the school in action. It will also help staff to learn about the value of governance, and build a positive 'team' approach.
2) Spring clean your governance: agendas have become cluttered overtime and sometimes it just feels like your on the governance treadmill. Shake things up a bit and focus on what's really important.
3) Evaluate regularly - there are lots of ways that you can assess the value of what you do as governors. There are:
External Reviews - which provide an external perspective of your governance and how to improve;
Building a self-reflection element into all of your meetings;
Taking the time to learn, develop and improve together annually, using tools such as the award-winning Shaping Governance®.
We're really excited about the year ahead, and will share more with you in February, however following winning a Cheshire Business Award, we will be launching a new membership service for customers of Shaping Governance® - which is fast becoming the 'go-to' tool for governors to learn, share and improve in a short focused session.
VALUING TIME + APPRECIATING GOVERNORS = SHAPING GOVERNANCE®
Best wishes for the 2020
